God created us in his image and as sexual beings and
declared “it was very good” (Genesis 1:31a). But,
as in other areas of our lives, what is good can be abused. Patrick
Carnes, Ph.D. defines sexual addiction as, “A pathological (habitual,
maladaptive, and compulsive) relationship with a mood altering experience”.
Regardless of the form of sexual acting out (internet, pornographic
material, fantasy, masturbation, prostitution, exhibitionism, multiple
relationships, etc.) a person is addicted when they no longer have the ability
to stop on their own. When
most addicts act out sexually they make promises to themselves that they will
never do it again. Yet
somehow they continue to act out again and again and again. |
